Richard Archibald, a Scotsman, became known in the town through the firm of Wright and Archibald, drapers, which he established in 1862.

They later built Wright’s Tower House, the department store. He was a member of the Town Council from 1872, an alderman from 1881, and mayor in 1881.

In 1910 he was made an honorary freeman of Middlesbrough. Alderman Archibald was one of the founders of the Middlesbrough and Cleveland Boys’ Brigade in 1891.

He gave the land on which Archibald School was built. Richard Archibald’s concern for the young was inspired by his strong Christian faith. He was an elder of the Presbyterian church in the town.
